The PGA Tour is back in San Diego, at the renowed courses at Torrey Pines for this week’s Farmers Insurance Open. Max Homa returns to defend his title from a year ago. The West Coast kid trailed 54-hole leader Sam Burns by five shots on the final day in 2023 but came through with a six-under 66 on the South Course to eventually win his first tour event as a father.
There will be a strong field of pros in Southern California, including Xander Schauffele (a San Diego native), Patrick Cantlay, Collin Morikawa, Keegan Bradley, Sepp Straka, Jason Day, Sahith Theegala, Tony Finau and Sungjae Im. Nick Dunlap, the U.S. Amateur champion who stunned the golf world by winning last week’s American Express event in La Quinta, Calif., was also supposed to be playing on a sponsor’s exemption but withdrew from Torrey Pines on Monday. Instead, he’s returning home to Alabama for a little celebrating with his family and Crimson Tide teammates as well as to mull whether or not to turn pro and join the PGA Tour immediately.
This will be the last chance for golfers to get earn their way into the tour’s next signature event, the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, which tees off the first week of February. The Farmers Insurance Open is the last tournament of the Aon Swing 5 stretch of the season.
The winner at Torrey Pines will receive 500 FedEx Cup points and a $1.62 million share of the $9 million purse.
