Patrick Mahomes has been omitted from the Pro Bowl selections for the first time since becoming a starting quarterback in the NFL, while Lamar Jackson is one of a league-high nine Baltimore Ravens players included.
The Kansas City Chiefs star, a three-time Super Bowl MVP, missed out on a place in the AFC roster having been included every year since becoming starter at Arrowhead in his second season.
Tight end Travis Kelce did, however, earn his 10th Pro Bowl selection as one of five Chiefs players to make the cut alongside defensive lineman Chris Jones and interior offensive linemen Joe Thuney, Trey Smith and Creed Humphrey.
Mahomes, statistically, has endured one of the worst campaigns of his glittering career having thrown for 3,928 yards, 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Nonetheless, the Chiefs remain in pursuit of a historic third straight Super Bowl crown after clinching the No 1 seed in the AFC as they enter the final weekend of the regular season 15-1.
Two-time NFL MVP Lamar Jackson leads the selections in Baltimore as one of the favourites to win a third MVP having thrown for 3,955 yards and 39 touchdowns to just four interceptions alongside 852 rushing yards and four scores on the ground.
He is joined by Ravens teammate Derrick Henry thanks to his 1,783 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns in his first season with the team.
Jackson features alongside MVP rival Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills and Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals as the AFC’s starting quarterbacks.
Washington Commanders play-caller Jayden Daniels is meanwhile the fourth rookie quarterback since 1970 to be selected to the initial Pro Bowl roster, joining the Detroit Lions’ Jared Goff and Minnesota Vikings comeback star Sam Darnold as the NFC’s starting quarterbacks.
Las Vegas Raiders tight end Brock Bowers, who just broke the record for rookie receptions, and Los Angeles Rams edge rusher Jared Verse are the other two first-year players included.
Detroit boast seven selections ahead of six each for the Vikings and Philadelphia Eagles, including 2,000-yard running back Saquon Barkley. The Miami Dolphins, New York Jets, Tennessee Titans and New Orleans Saints are the only teams not to have a single player awarded a Pro Bowl slot.
Peyton Manning and Eli Manning will serve as respective head coaches for the seven-on-seven all-star flag football game between the two conferences in Florida on February 2.
