ST. PAUL, Minn. – Macalester College senior guard Caleb Williams (Wild Rose, Wis./Wild Rose) was named an Academic All-American for the second year in a row by the College Sports Communicators, the organization announced. Williams, who was included on the third team this year, was a first team selection a year ago, when he became the first men’s basketball player at Macalester to be selected to the Academic All-America team.
“Congratulations to Caleb on this special honor,” Macalester head coach Abe Woldeslassie ’08 said. “It’s a credit to how hard he has worked in the classroom. He has represented Macalester so well and is the epitome of a successful student-athlete. Well done, Caleb!”
A physics and mathematics double major at Macalester, Williams has a 3.94 grade point average through the Fall 2023 semester. He has made the Academic All-MIAC team and the CSC Academic All-District team twice.
Williams completed his outstanding career at Macalester this winter by leading his team in scoring for the third straight year. His success on the court led to All Region and All-MIAC honors for the third consecutive season after averaging 20.0 points per game to rank second in the MIAC. In a 92-88 victory at Concordia College, Williams poured in a career-high 51 points, making 20-of-28 from the field en route to the second-most points scored in a MIAC game in the conference’s history. Before the start of the regular season, he scored an improbable 41 points in an exhibition game at the University of Minnesota, giving Macalester fans a thrill they won’t soon forget. In 80 career games as a Scot, he has scored 1,566 points to rank third all-time at Macalester.
Williams is Macalester’s first repeat Academic All-American since men’s soccer player Jackson White ’20 earned the honor in 2018 and 2019. He joins junior Hans Haenicke (Lisle, Ill/Benet) as Scots who have been named Academic All-Americans during the 2023-24 academic year.
The CSC Academic All-America program honors student-athletes for excellence in both academics and athletics. Student-athletes must be at least a sophomore, have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.50 or higher and play in 90 percent or start 66 percent of the team’s games to be considered for Academic All-District and All-American accolades.
