History was created when the American tourist ship ‘Lohanka’ anchored at Azhikkal port on Tuesday morning. Though cargo ships and other goods-carrying ships have arrived here, this is the first time a foreign tourist ship has anchored at the Azhikkal Port.
The ship, commanded by Captain Raymond Peter Sealy, carried nine people, including the crew members, an American citizen named Sergvel Kosumin, and his wife, Elena Kausmina, who are owners of Lohanka.
This news is special for Azhikkal because it is the first time in five years that a tourist ship like this has arrived after the approval of the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code.
The ship ‘Lohanka’ was anchored at Azhikkal around 10 a.m. on Wednesday after visiting the coasts of Kochi and Beypur. The couple has plans to visit Mangaluru next, followed by Mumbai.
They are here at Azhikkal to experience Kannur’s Theyyam and savour the delicacies.
After inspection by the Intelligence Bureau, Coastal Police and Special Branch, the couple was warmly welcomed under the guidance of the Azhikkal Port Office and the District Tourism Promotion Council. They were greeted with a shawl under the leadership of KV Sumesh, MLA.
Captain Pradish K.G. Nair, T. Dipankumar, V.V. Prasad, P.V. cargo shipping company’s Vishesh Raj, Vasanth Kumar, DTPC Secretary J.K. Jijesh Kumar and P.R. Sarath Kumar were part of this greeting process.
Officials say this visit is an achievement for the district and for the Azhikkal port. Lohanka’s arrival will boost the tourism sector, they added.
