THE College Football Playoffs has revealed their first-ever 12-team schedule for the upcoming season.
Since the formation of the CFP in 2014, four teams have battled it out for a spot in the National Championship.
The new-look format will debut at 8pm ET on Friday, December 20 with the first of four First Round games, as revealed by the CFP.
The remaining three will be played the following day at 12pm, 4pm, and 8pm.
These games will be played at the higher-ranked team’s stadium.
As for the four highest-seeded conference champions, they will then make their bow in the Quarterfinals after enjoying a bye.
The first Playoff Quarterfinal, the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl, will then be held on New Year’s Eve at 7:30pm.
On New Year’s Day, the remaining three Quarterfinals will take place, starting with the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl at 1pm.
The Rose Bowl Game presented by Prudential is scheduled for 5pm.
Finally, the Allstate Sugar Bowl will kick off at 8:45pm.
The first Semifinal, the Capital One Orange Bowl, is slated for January 9 at 7:30pm.
On January 10, the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic will decide the other finalist, starting at 7:30pm.
The National Championship Game will be held at the home of the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons, Mercedes-Benz Stadium, on Monday, January 20 at 7:30pm.
This will mark the second time that Mercedes-Benz Stadium has hosted a National Championship, having also played host to Alabama’s overtime triumph over Georgia in 2018.
It was this final game that has proved contentious among some fans on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“I don’t understand for the life of me why college national championships, basketball and football, are on Monday nights,” one fan tweeted.
Oklahoma and Texas switching from the Big 12 to the SEC is one of the biggest changes to college football in recent times.
And that has set off a chain reaction which has left the Pac-12 conference decimated.
The Pac-12 has lost 10 of its 12 members and is down to just Oregon State and Washington State.
Four of those teams are headed for the Big 12 – Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah.
Another four are going to the Big 10 – Oregon, UCLA, USC and Washington.
And the other two teams, California and Stanford, will join the ACC conference.
No teams have left the SEC, Big Ten or ACC.
“Why is the natty still on a Monday???? Play on a Saturday night at 6!!!!!!!!” said a second.
“Jan 20!!!! Y’all busy Dec 1-20? You need those off?” asked another.
“Why is it on a Monday you own Saturday all year? Saturday afternoon is a big party. Monday is watching from bed.”
The first two First Round games on December 21 will be available to watch on TNT, who agreed to sublicense select games from ESPN in May.
Besides those two, all other games will be available on ESPN – with ABC also broadcasting the first and last of the First Round games.
