While Brandon Aiyuk’s future with the San Francisco 49ers is still very much up in the air, he reportedly will be in attendance during the team’s training camp.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo reported Tuesday that Aiyuk will report to camp even though he wants a new contract and requested a trade because San Francisco “has not held extensive contract talks since May.”
General manager John Lynch also told reporters, “We fully intend on Brandon being a Niner,” while calling him an “integral part of the team.”
Yet Lynch also added that there are “no absolutes there” when it comes to trade discussions.
Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported Saturday that five teams were interested in trading for Aiyuk and giving him a new deal ahead of the 2024 NFL draft but were unable to come to an agreement with San Francisco.
Florio also noted the 49ers rejected a second-round pick offer from the New England Patriots and listed the Pittsburgh Steelers and Washington Commanders as potentially interested suitors.
Trade negotiations ahead of the draft made sense, as the NFC West team could have landed multiple draft picks for the wide receiver and used one to replace him. However, trade talks at this stage of the calendar are more difficult, as San Francisco is a realistic Super Bowl contender and likely would need an impact player back in return.
It could also always use the franchise tag on him and trade him for 2025 picks after the season, taking away from any immediate urgency from the team’s perspective.
And any contract negotiations with Aiyuk will surely be impacted by this offseason’s developments at the wide receiver position.
Justin Jefferson of the Minnesota Vikings reset the market at an average of $35 million per year, while A.J. Brown of the Philadelphia Eagles (average of $32 million per year), Amon-Ra St. Brown of the Detroit Lions (average of $30 million per year) and Jaylen Waddle of the Miami Dolphins (average of $28.3 million per year) also inked significant extensions.
Aiyuk may not be on the same level as Jefferson, but he is still one of the league’s top wide receivers who is coming off a career year.
He posted 75 catches for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns last season while helping lead the 49ers to the Super Bowl. It was the 26-year-old’s second straight campaign with more than 1,000 receiving yards.
He is a go-to option in a loaded offense that also features Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel and George Kittle. Defenses have to pick their poison when it comes to containing so many weapons, and moving Aiyuk would surely impact everyone else’s numbers as well.
For now, he is still a member of the team and reporting to training camp.
