NEW ULM — The Marshall Mudcats were unable to overcome Mankato American in the DI District 2 Sub-State Legion Baseball Tournament, falling 11-1 in five innings in the elimination bracket Friday at Johnson Park.
The game was called after five innings due to the 10-run rule.
Logan Miller took the loss for Marshall, striking out two while allowing five runs on three hits and one walk. At the plate, Andrew Stelter was 3 for 3 with a double, while Liam Kruse was 1 for 3 with an RBI. Marshall did not record any other hits in the game.
Miller managed to collect both of his strikeouts in the first inning and retiring three of four batters in the frame. Stelter got a leadoff double in the bottom of the inning, but a fielder’s choice prevented him from advancing. Kruse made it to third base on a single and a throwing error, but Marshall didn’t get the hit it needed to score him, leaving him stranded.
Mankato got on board in the second, plating five on three hits and two errors. Mankato continued the damage in the third, scoring five more times on three hits and an error to take a commanding 10-0 lead.
Marshall stopped the bleeding somewhat in the fourth, allowing only one run, but were unable to score a run of its own until the bottom of the fifth. There, Owen Kesteloot drew a walk and was moved to second when Coby Brownlee was hit by a pitch. Stelter singled to load the bases, then Kruse grounded into a fielder’s choice that scored Kesteloot.
Marshall was unable to get another run to extend the game, however, cutting its championship asperations short with a strikeout to end the game.
