The 2024 US Open, the final Grand Slam of the tennis season, is around the corner and we give you all the information you need ahead of the hard-court major.

When does the 2024 US Open take place?

This year’s US Open marks the 144th edition of the tournament and the main draw will get underway on Monday, August 26 with the finals weekend on September 7 and 8. The women’s showpiece match will be staged on the Saturday while the men’s final will take place on the Sunday.

Tell us about the venue for the season-ending Grand Slam?

The United States Tennis Association (USTA) Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows–Corona Park, Queens, New York City will host the US Open for the 45th consecutive year.

The facility has 22 outdoor courts, but only 15 DecoTurf hard courts will be used. The four showcourts are Arthur Ashe Stadium, Louis Armstrong Stadium, the Grandstand and Court 17. Arthur Ashe and Louis Armstrong come with retractable roofs.

In case you didn’t know, Arthur Ashe can host 23,771 people, making it the largest tennis stadium in the world, while Louis Armstrong can hold 14,053 spectators, the Grandstand has 8,125 seats and Court 17 has a capacity of 2,800.

Who are the defending champions?

It was a case of something old and something new at the 2023 US Open as Novak Djokovic won his fourth title at Flushing Meadows and 24th Grand Slam with a straight-set win over Daniil Medvedev in the final.

In the women’s event, Coco Gauff became a first-time Grand Slam winner as she beat Aryna Sabalenka in three sets. Gauff was the first American teenager to win the US Open since Serena Williams achieved the feat in 1999.

Who are the leading seeds for this year’s tournament?

Jannik Sinner has been confirmed as the top seed for the men’s draw with Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev, Andrey Rublev, Hubert Hurkacz, Casper Ruud, Grigor Dimitrov and Alex de Minaur making up the top 10. However, Zverev can still beat Djokovic to second place, but he needs to win the Cincinnati Open.

On the women’s side, Iga Swiatek headlines the draw and she is followed by Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff, Elena Rybakina, Jasmine Paolini, Jessica Pegula, Zheng Qinwen, Barbora Krejcikova, Maria Sakkari and Jelena Ostapenko.

Who will miss the 2024 US Open?

Rafael Nadal is the biggest name missing from the men’s main draw as he has opted to skip the tournament to work on his fitness. Nadal would’ve been able to play through his protected ranking of nine.

British No 2 Cameron Norrie will also not feature due to an arm injury.

2022 Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova is nursing a hand injury and will also not play at Flushing Meadows.

Wildcards, protected rankings, other entrants

Grand Slam winners Stan Wawrinka and Dominic Thiem are among the eight players to receive wildcards on the men’s side Naomi Osaka and Bianca Andreescu have received the nod in the women’s draw.

Pablo Carreno Busta (18) and Denis Shapovalov (27) will also feature as they have used their protected ranking. Ajla Tomljanović (33) and Zhang Shuai (48) have entered the women’s draw via the same route.

After missing last year’s tournament, 2021 winner Emma Raducanu will play at Flushing Meadows as she qualified via her ranking.

Despite his recent inactivity following his gold medal run at the Paris Olympics, Novak Djokovic is also set to return to action in New York to defend his title.

When does qualifying take place?

Qualifying will get underway on August 19 and the final matches will be on Thursday, August 22 with players needing to win three matches to book their places in the main draw.

What about the main draw…

The main draw for this year’s tournament is set for Thursday, August 22 and it is usually scheduled for 12:00 New York time (17:00 BST).

It is a 128-player field with 32 of them seeded. Sixteen of the 128 players will come through qualifying.

Which TV channels will broadcast the tournament?

The US Open returns to Sky Sports in Britain and Ireland last year and it will once again feature exclusively on Sky Sports and Now TV. BBC will have radio commentaries on 5 Live and Sports Extra, BBC Sounds, plus the Sport website and app.

ESPN remains the go-to channel in the United States after signing an extended $825-million deal with the USTA.

Eurosport will air the US Open in mainland Europe although Sky Dacht will cover Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, South Tyroll. Sportdeutschland.TV (Germany, Austria and Switzerland) and SuperTennis (Italy) also have broadcasting rights.

Canada is covered by TSN, WOWOW is the broadcaster in Japan, beIN Sports has the rights in the Middle East and North Africa; and ESPN International in Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, South America and Oceania.

Nine Network has the rights for Australia while SuperSport will air the tournament Sub-Saharan Africa.

What about the prize money?

A record $75 million in prize money will be handed out in 2024, which is a 15% increase from the previous year.

The men’s and women’s singles champions will each walk away with a $3,600,000 cheque while the runners-up will earn $1,800,000.
