American Airlines has several new flight options for travelers eager to see the Colosseum in Rome, or take in the Prado’s art collection in Madrid.

The carrier will add five new routes to Europe from four of its hubs next summer. Beginning on March 30, 2025, American will connect Chicago O’Hare to Madrid with a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. Then on May 23, it will link Philadelphia to both Edinburgh and Milan also with 787-8s. From June 5, American will launch flights from Charlotte to Athens, and then a month later from Miami to Rome both on Boeing 777-200s.

Tickets for the new routes, all of which will operate daily through summer 2025, are on sale from Sept. 9.

“We’re seeing a lot of success in these core markets,” said Brian Znotins, senior vice president of network and schedule planning at American. Except for Edinburgh, the airline already serves Athens, Madrid, Milan, and Rome from its other U.S. hubs.

American last served Edinburgh in 2019 but dropped the route during the pandemic when it retired its fleet of Boeing 757 and 767s.

The new Madrid flight comes with the added benefit of connections to hundreds of flights throughout Europe offered by American’s partner Iberia. The Spanish airline serves 70 destinations in Europe from Madrid, including popular summer spots like Ibiza, Menorca, and Porto, according to Cirium Diio schedules. 

The five new transatlantic routes come as American plans to return to Copenhagen, Naples, and Nice from Philadelphia next summer. Flights to the three cities launched this summer on a seasonal basis.

American will also extend its existing winter flight between Miami and Paris through the summer, and move up the start of summer flights between Dallas-Fort Worth and Barcelona, and Philadelphia and Athens to March 30 from June and May, respectively. Summer flights to Naples from Philadelphia will also start a month earlier than planned in May.
