The Grade 1, $1.05 million Haskell Stakes is always a popular feature of the 3-year-old season, but Saturday’s renewal takes on special meaning with a Belmont Stakes rematch between 1-2 finishers Dornoch and Mindframe.
Trainer Todd Pletcher and owner Mike Repole entered both Mindframe and Fierceness entered, but Repole said Saturday morning that Fierceness would be scratched.
Post time for the Haskell, the 12th of 14 races on the program, is scheduled for 5:45 p.m. EDT. The Haskell day card features more than $3.2 million in purses with six stakes races in total. Seven races are slated for the turf with the other seven on the main dirt track. The Haskell will be shown live on NBC, Peacock and FanDuel TV.

Haskell best speed figures
With Fierceness out, Mindframe and Dornoch ran the top speed figures of any horse in the race.
What does ChatGPT say?
Just for fun I loaded the speed figure table above into ChatGPT, and here’s what it returned:
Mindframe is another strong contender with high ratings with a Beyer Speed Figure of 103 according to Daily Racing Form, a Timeform US best 124 and a Horse Racing Nation rating of 113.
Dornoch also has strong ratings, Beyer 101, Timeform US 125 and HRN 105, making him another top contender with odds of 5-2.
Tuscan Sky and Timberlake are mid-level contenders with decent ratings but longer odds.
Sea Streak, Jasper’s Pride and Just Step On It have the lowest ratings and are long shots based on the provided odds.
Based on these ratings and odds, Mindframe stands out as the top contender for this race followed closely by Dornoch.
I’m not sure we want to take the ChatGPT summary very seriously, so let’s move on to some proven handicapping methods.
Examining the pace
Looking at speed figures, TimeformUS rates the Haskell as having a fast pace with Tuscan Sky and Mindframe all having potential to show speed with Dornoch, Timberlake and Sea Streak close behind. The Pace Projector here was prepared before Fierceness was scratched.
HRN picks for the Haskell
This week’s Super Screener has picks for several Saturday stakes at Monmouth including the Matchmaker (G3), Wolf Hill sprint, Monmouth Cup (G3), United Nations (G1) and Haskell. In addition there are picks and analysis for the Lake George (G3) and Coaching Club American Oaks (G1) at Saratoga plus the Oceanside and San Clemente (G2) at Del Mar.
Super Screener is coming into the weekend hot after nailing the exacta cold in the Saratoga opening-weekend feature, the Diana (G1). It tabbed Whitebeam over Moira to the tune of $11.60 on the top-pick winner and a 41-1 exacta.
About the Haskell, Super Screener author Mike Shutty said: “If Mindframe goes, he’s probably the best horse in the race despite still being a bit green, and he submitted the best race among the other runners in the Belmont Stakes. He benefits big time on the cutback in distance and having had a top effort over this surface.”
In other stakes, the Super Screener thinks both favorites are vulnerable in Del Mar’s Oceanside Stakes, which could lead to big prices.
Super Screener is available weekly featuring key stakes and multi-race sequences in North America. Each screened race includes picks, analysis and wagering strategy. Subscribe today and get every week from now through Breeders’ Cup plus daily Power Picks and Horses to Single reports, all for $97.
In other handicapping tools, Ed DeRosa’s Haskell Fair Odds say Mindframe is the horse to beat, no matter who shows up.
Laurie Ross and Ashley Tamulonis went Head to Head handicapping the Haskell Stakes and have opposing views of who will come out on top.
Brian Zipse and Matt Shifman previewed the Haskell Stakes and the Coaching Club American Oaks, among other races, in the latest edition of HorseCenter.
Repole, Shutty and workout analyst Bruno De Julio all joined the Ron Flatter Racing Pod to discuss the Haskell as well as the opening of Del Mar and the CCA Oaks.
