With the US Open — the last Grand Slam of the year — behind us, fans of American tennis have yet again had their hopes dashed. Following Taylor Fritz’s loss to Jannik Sinner, male American tennis players have remained without a Grand Slam title since 2003.
American men’s tennis players will have something of a shot at redemption when the Laver Cup kicks off tomorrow, September 20 in Berlin. Because of the time difference, you’ll need to be an early riser if you’re a US-based fan hoping to catch the competition live.

The Laver Cup, held at the Uber Arena in Berlin, is unlike other tennis tournaments. The invitational is modeled after the Ryder Cup, a golf tournament in which Team Europe faces Team USA. At the Laver Cup, Team Europe faces off against Team World. Since its inception in 2017, Team Europe has been captained by Bjorn Borg, while Team World has been led by John McEnroe.
2022 marked the first time Team World beat Team Europe, and they handily beat Team Europe again in 2023. They’ll be looking for a three-peat with Americans Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe, and Ben Shelton representing Team World this year. The roster will be rounded out by Francisco Cerundolo of Argentina, Alejandro Tabilo of Chile, and Thanasi Kokkinakis of Australia.
Team Europe suffered a setback when Rafael Nadal withdrew from the competition, but they’ll still have plenty of high-caliber talent in their roster, including ATP #2 Alexander Zverev, #3 Carlos Alcaraz, and #5 Daniil Medvedev. Grigor Dimitrov replaced Nadal, and Casper Ruud of Norway and Stefanos Tsitsipas round out Team Europe.
The four matches from Day One have been announced, with Ruud taking on Cerundolo, Tsitsipas facing Kokkinakis, and Dimitrov going against Tabilo. The final match of the night will be a doubles match with Alcaraz and Zverev facing Fritz and Shelton.
