NORMAN – Chloé Noël advanced to the singles main draw at the ITA All-American Championships on Tuesday in Cary, N.C.
The sophomore won two consecutive singles matches in qualifying action to become one of 16 players to advance through qualifying singles into the main draw, which is set to begin Wednesday.
In the opening round of singles qualifying play on Monday, No. 118 Noël secured a victory over Georgia’s No. 94 Aysegul Mert, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. The win saw Noël move on to the Round of 32, in which she faced her second seeded opponent of the competition.
Taking on No. 112 Bojana Pozder of Notre Dame on Tuesday morning, Noël earned a spot in the main draw bracket with a 6-4, 7-6(2) win.
After winning three singles matches in pre-qualifying, senior Ava Catanzarite dropped her opening round qualifying match in the singles draw to UCLA’s No. 83 Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer, 4-6, 7-5, 3-6. Catanzarite bounced back on Tuesday in the consolation bracket, earning a straight-set win over Florida State’s No. 120 Amelia Bissett, 6-3, 6-0.
Fellow senior Emma Staker completed her run in North Carolina, picking up a 6-1, 6-4 win over No. 107 Mao Mushika (Cal) before losing to Tennessee’s No. 81 Catherin Aulia, 7-6(6), 3-6, 1-6 in the round of 32.
Noël will join teammates Julia Garcia Ruiz and Alina Shcherbinina in the singles main draw on Wednesday. Noël and Garcia Ruiz will also pair up to compete in the doubles bracket. Main draw opponents and times will be announced at a later time.
