Tulsa, Okla. – Texas Men’s Tennis junior No. 30 Sebastian Gorzny advanced to the singles final at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa on Saturday. In doing so, Gorzny became the second Longhorn to reach the final in the last two years after Eliot Spizzirri won the tournament last year.
Gorzny won his semifinals match against No. 71 Aidan Kim of Ohio State in a close three-set contest, 7-5, 5-7, 7-5. In the first set, Kim was the first to break, taking a 5-4 lead. However, Gorzny responded by winning the nine-straight points and 12 of the next 13 to win the last three games and the set. In the second, Gorzny broke first, sandwiching it in between two holds for a 3-0 lead. The next five games then all went to deuce with Kim winning four of them to tie the set, 4-4. Gorzny regained the lead on serve in the next game, but Kim broke Gorzny’s next serve as part of a 3-0 run to take the set.
In the third, both players held their opening serve, starting with Gorzny, but the following three games were all breaks, providing Kim a 3-2 lead that he then consolidated for 4-2. However, Gorzny held in the next game, then broke on a deuce point and held again for a 5-4 lead. Kim evened it on a deuce-point hold, but Gorzny held in the following game and broke on a deuce point to take the match. Gozny will now play 3 seed #3 Oliver Tarvet of San Diego at 12 p.m. CT on Sunday.
Junior No. 29 Jonah Braswell split a pair of consolation matches on Saturday with the win coming against a top-10 opponent in 6 seed #6 Radu Papoe of Cornell, 6-1, 7-6 (8). In the first set, Braswell broke and held for a 2-0 lead, and after Papoe took his only game of the set, Braswell closed it on a 4-0 run, including deuce-point wins in the last two. Braswell also won the first two games of the second set with a hold and a break, but Papoe then went on a 4-0 run. Braswell came back with the next three games for a 5-4 lead, including two deuce-point holds, and the following three games stayed on serve to a tiebreaker.
The breaker went back and forth with Braswell getting out to a 3-1 lead, and the players then exchanging three 3-0 runs that left Papoe with a 7-6 lead. Braswell moved back in front, 8-7, and after Papoe tied it, Braswell secured the final two points for the win.
Later in the afternoon, Braswell returned to the court against No. 33 Braden Shick of NC State, but fell, 6-3, 6-2. Braswell led the first set, 3-1, including a deuce-point hold and break, but Shick also won consecutive deuce-point games to start a 9-0 run that won the set and established a 4-0 lead in the second.
