During the 2024 season, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid made it plain that he’d like Carson Wentz to return to Kansas City in 2025, amid uncertainty over the 32-year-old quarterback’s future.

Having signed a one-year, $3.3 million contract with the Chiefs last April, Wentz spent the 2024 campaign as backup to the team’s No. 1 QB Patrick Mahomes, making one start for the Missourians.

“He should be starting in the league somewhere”

Wentz might have enjoyed scarce game time, but that doesn’t mean Reid doesn’t hold the nine-year NFL veteran in extremely high regard.

Indeed, the coach has described himself as one of Wentz’s “biggest fans”, telling reporters that he would like the quarterback to remain at Arrowhead Stadium, but fears the player may leave in search of more regular minutes.

“Selfishly, I’d like to keep him, but I don’t think that’s going to be possible,” Reid said in late December, according to Sports Illustrated. “He should be starting in the league somewhere, that’s what he should be doing. By his ability and the way he goes about his business, he’s so structured and disciplined in his study habits and working out, all those things are just top-notch.”

Reid had already heaped praise on Wentz earlier in December, referring to him as a “heck of player” when he told a news conference: “He’s started in the league and been successful. He’s got a great feel for this offense, very smart, big arm. I like the way he carries himself – I like everything about him.”

“Can’t wait to see what God has in store”

Wentz, who has been linked with the New York Giants, has in recent days taken to social media with end-of-season thank-you posts that have offered no explicit indication about his future plans.

On February 10, the day after the Chiefs lost Super Bowl LIX to the Philadelphia Eagles, Wentz posted photos of himself alongside Kansas City colleagues Mahomes and Travis Kelce, a player tipped for retirement.

“Got to work with some of the best in the world this year and grateful for the opportunity to be a part of greatness day in and day out,” Wentz said. “Came up short at the end but the memories and relationships can never be taken for granted!”

Last week, Wentz then posted on Instagram: “Grateful for another incredible year playing the game I love. Can’t wait to see what God has in store for year 10!”
