For American Aaron Jones, this cricket party’s only getting started.
Jones, who introduced himself to the U.S. and the globe in America’s T20 Cricket World Cup-opening win against Canada in Dallas, said he believes his team can continue to shock after advancing to the tournament’s second round, the Super Eights.
“Everybody’s happy right now,” Jones said, according to ESPNcricinfo. “Obviously, qualifying for the Super Eights is a big thing.”
America advanced after Friday’s match with Ireland was abandoned due to rain in Florida, guaranteeing the U.S. the single point it needed to move on and second place in Group A. The U.S. opened the tourney 2-0, upsetting Pakistan after beating Canada. It lost to India, which won Group A.
Jones is hoping the U.S. continues to fly under its opponents’ radar.
“Probably the whole world (doesn’t) already know how much talent we have here and how good the players that we have here are,” Jones said. “I think that could be a little advantage to us, but definitely, I think that on any given day, once we play proper cricket, we believe that we can beat any team in the world for sure.”
The Americans will play three more matches in the Super Eights stage of the tourney, and their northern neighbors will be rooting for them.
Canadian wicketkeeper Shreyas Movva credited Jones and the U.S. for paving the way for countries like his.
“It’s a motivation for (Canada) going into the next tournaments that USA have done it, so we can do (it) too,” Movva said.
