Fans were treated to a horse racing banquet during the 2023 Breeders’ Cup Championship. A number of well-known horses competed, including the Irish filly Mawj. This was the horse that dominated the Santa Anita racecourse but was only able to secure a second-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Mile. The filly then never appeared on the track and ended its 2023 season with four race wins out of five races. A few days ago, it was confirmed that Mawj would be opening her 2024 season in the prestigious G1 Jebel Hatta, and it was a hit among her fans.

Oisin Murphy has been riding the filly since the race at Newmarket in 2023. Although he rode Mawj to victories in the UK, the jockey missed the opportunity to celebrate a G1 victory in the United States as the filly placed second in the Breeders’ Cup Mile. Nevertheless, the 3x British Champion Jockey will still be riding the horse for the 2024 season as well, as he has few words to share before the G1 challenge.

Upcoming challenge for the Breeders’ Cup Mile runner-up

The world of horse racing is familiar to Oisin Murphy. He continues to give it all every time he mounts the horse, even though he has already shown his worth to the fans during his rookie years. Murphy rode Mawj to victory in the Qipco 1000 Guineas Stakes (Gr. 1) after replacing Daniel Tudhope as the filly’s jockey. According to Dubai Racing Club’s X post, the rider reflected on his victory with Mawj in the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes (Gr. 1), recalling that “Mawj had a brilliant year last year and won over a similar distance at Keeeneland.”

Just looking forward to the future ahead with the filly gives the jockey real joy. In addition, Murphy expressed his excitement about “really looking forward to” riding Mawj in the G1 Jebel Hatta. Though he had already begun his training for the 2024 season, the jockey’s favorite ride would be the filly, and he can’t wait to ride her at the G1 event.

A mixed American dream

The British Champion Jockey is no stranger to the American horse racing scene. Even though Murphy has multiple graded stakes wins in the United Kingdom, the jockey still aims for major stints on American soil. In the 2023 Belmont Stakes, Murphy showcased his talent when he dominated the G1 race with horse, Aspen Grove.

As impressive as it was for the rider to win one of the three Triple Crown races, he also continued his winning streak with Mawj when he came to the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes. The jockey had similar expectations going into the Breeders’ Cup Mile, but the dreams were shattered when he finished second in the race. Given that Murphy will be returning to the 2024 season with the same filly, the jockey may eagerly anticipate a massive stint that will satisfy his supporters.
