A “technical issue” grounded all U.S. American Airlines (AA) flights this Christmas Eve.
The airline shared the news via X — formerly Twitter — posting, “We’re currently experiencing a technical issue with all American Airlines flights.”
They added that passenger safety was their “utmost priority” and once the situation was resolved they would have people on their way to their destinations. Per NBC News, the ground stop was lifted at 8 a.m. ET.
Ahead of the resolution, an AA spokesperson told CNN that they were working to “resolve the issue as quickly as possible.” They also apologized to customers for the inconvenience of disrupted holiday travel.

Per a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) advisory notice, AA requested a ground stop for all its flights. CNN reported that the FAA directed all queries about the incident to the airline.
When asked to provide a timeline for the initial disruption in the comments section of their X post, an airline spokesperson said that they were “trying to fix it in the shortest possible time.”
Another traveler lamented their spoilt holiday plans, posting, “What about connecting flights? I really don’t want our family vacation getting ruined because of this.”
