Hit show American Idol’s production crew has found relief in Carrie Underwood, describing her as a “ray of sunshine” after Katy Perry’s turbulent tenure.
Katy Perry, 40, stepped down as a judge earlier this year after seven controversial seasons to focus on her music career, releasing her latest album, Lifetimes, which critics and fans widely panned.
In her place, country music sensation and Idol alum Carrie Underwood, 41, joined the panel alongside Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie for the show’s upcoming season.
A production insider shared: “Carrie has been a ‘godsend’ for the show. I hate to sound so cheesy, but it really is like a ray of sunshine after a chaotic and stormy few years with some of the on-camera talent.”
During her time on Idol, Katy faced backlash for controversies, including kissing a younger contestant without consent and accusations of “mom-shaming.”
The insider compared Carrie’s judging style to the beloved original Idol judges: “Carrie is a combination of Paula and Simon. She’s sweet and nurturing like Paula but isn’t afraid to give honest, constructive feedback like Simon.”
Filming has been emotional for Carrie, returning to the set where she launched her career 20 years ago.
The moment that struck her most was seeing Ryan Seacrest with contestants.
“That was her not too long ago, and now she’s on the other side of the desk. A lot of tears were spilled,” the source revealed.
“I feel like being on both sides of the coin, I’ll be able to hopefully offer some insight and help,” Carrie shared in a recent interview.
