DULUTH, Minn. (Northern News Now) – From ribbon skirts and jingle dresses to beaded jewelry and headpieces galore, many Northlanders got a glimpse of some special Indigenous fashion pieces on Saturday.
American Indian Community Housing Organization and the Tweed Museum of Art collaborated to host a Celebration of Native American Fashion Show Saturday afternoon at the University of Minnesota Duluth.
The show presented 25 models from eight different tribal Nations. Alyza and Delilah Savage were some of the many models presenting their cultural clothing from the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa.
“Well at some point these were the things that we wore every day and that we took pride in,” said Alyza Savage.
She said that most of their clothing was made by their mother. Delilah Savage was grateful to be a part of an event that could showcase the many beauties of her people.
“I’m just very thankful for Wendy Savage and giving this opportunity to us young native people,” Delilah Savage said. “She really does a lot for this community, especially in Duluth.”
Wendy Savage, the curator of the show, said this show highlighted the importance of Indigenous people’s culture and fashion especially when there used to be a time when they weren’t allowed to express themselves.
“We want to see work done by Indigenous people,” said Wendy Savage. “Not people stealing designs and it has happened in the past. Native fashion designers work has been taken by big companies and then being sold.”
Savage said that there’s a huge resurgence of Native fashion.
Reviving Native fashion and culture is something Alyza Savage takes pride in.
She said she’ll continue to support Native businesses and highlight the importance of her culture.
“It’s not okay to take someone else’s design or to recreate something that isn’t yours. As Indigenous people we are original. It’s in our blood,” said Alyza Savage.
