Signs have been placed on the windows and doors at Lids, an American sportswear chain in the Eastgate Shopping Centre, confirming the shop has closed with immediate effect.
It is another blow to the shopping centre that has been hit by a number of big name closures in recent years including the likes of H&M, The Body Shop, and Debenhams.

Lids sells a range of sports merchandise, including Formula One, NFL and NBA products and opened in the Eastgate Shopping Centre in 2022 replacing the former “Pop The Look” clothing shop.
Labour councillor for jobs, skills and local economy, Jessica Power, said that despite the closure being a blow to the town, she is hopeful that the council’s plans for regeneration will help improve Basildon’s retail economy.
She said: “Although another loss to the town centre, we are aware our high streets and town centres need to diversify.
“With plans for regeneration coming to fruition, and construction beginning in the new year across the town centre, I am positive we will see a broad range of retail offers in the not too distant future.”
Despite the high-profile closures in recent years, a number of shops have been replaced with the opening Chopstix, and fashion jewellers, Lovisa as well as mini-golf attraction “Glow Sports Zone” and jewellers Samuel Perry.
Since being returned to Labour control in May, Basildon Council has been making progress on ambitious plans to regenerate the town centre, including the development of 492 flats in the Town Square.
The council have also purchased the near empty Westgate Shopping Centre for £18.5 million, with potential plans to to build a new 5,000-seater live-entertainment arena, shops and a hotel.
Handmade signs in the window of the Lids store said “This store is closed for good”, “I’ll miss all my regulars” and “It’s been fun.”
Lids has been contacted for comment.
