The indoor track and field season is right around the corner. Sprinters like Noah Lyles and others have added to the hype by announcing their opening events in the season. Trayvon Bromell has also cleared the air regarding his return to the indoor event. The universities as well are on their way to welcoming the indoor track and field sports season. Institutions like North Carolina Central University have already taken a few steps toward that. How? The track and field director of NCCU released the indoor track and field schedule in November for the upcoming indoor season. In December, they have pulled off sessions. From January, further sessions will unfold. Altogether, the stakeholders are on the last step to complete the preparations. Yet here comes a chaff in wheat.
When NCCU is looking hopefully to host the upcoming events in the indoor facilities seamlessly, a town in North Carolina is facing utmost adversities. No, it is not about the athletes’ response. Instead, it runs deep. Here are the details.

On December 23, Samantha Andreu, a middle-distance runner from Greenville, North Carolina, started a petition on Change.org. It is about requesting the city mayor, P. J. Connelly, to build an indoor track facility in the town. At present, the town has no such facility of the like. Furthermore, per Andreu, “The closest one available to high school athletes is over three hours away, making it incredibly hard for local teams and athletes to train, compete, and grow.” The impact of these rough situations has already spread its claws in Greenville. In the last several years, no such major performance has come from the local sprinters. But things are completely different in Rocky Mount, the nearest community.
As per Samantha Andreu, the nearby community of Rocky Mount has excelled in the sports sector. And the indoor sports arena facility in the town claims a few parts of credit for bringing the success. Andreu thinks that the Greenville track and field athlete could amass far more success compared to Rocky Mount.
But they would need the indoor sports facility before that to utilize time and chances. Is that a tremendous demand? According to Samantha, an indoor sports facility might host several contests and it would open the gates for further investments. Moreover, it would enable creating a friendly situation to bring more jobs. But everything is hanging right now. A positive approach can end the turmoil. But Greenville isn’t the only town facing issues related to track and field facility centers. There’s another town in the USA, experiencing almost a similar barrier.

The senior pole vaulter in Wisconsin has spent so many summers in the Camp Randall Sports Center, honing her skills. But now, she doesn’t have the facility anymore. Like her, the athletes in Wisconsin have no option of taking advantage of the facility, known as “The Shell.” The reason?

After serving track and field sports for 68 years, the facility has entered the renovation phase. Officials have decided to transform The Shell into an indoor track and field sports facility. The establishment came to a halt in 2023 for the general population. The athletes, however, continued to use it till the year-end. But since then, they have been without any such sports center. Moreover, they have no idea regarding the normalcy of the situation. The new project needs a fund of $11 million. But it also needs a massive timeline to be completed.

Regarding that, Moore said, “It doesn’t matter if in 2026 we have a really sad, three-lane track. Right now, we have nothing.” And the indoor season is approaching. In such a phase, no one has any idea to save the day. Do you have any takes on it? Let us know.
