An American visiting his elderly mom in Lebanon was among those killed in recent airstrikes, according to his family.
Kamel Ahmad Jawad of Michigan died Tuesday while visiting family in Nabatieh in southern Lebanon, his daughter, Nadine Jawad, said in a lengthy Instagram post late Wednesday.
Jawad — who lived in Dearborn, just outside Detroit — had been on the phone with his daughter when he suddenly fell from the impact of a nearby airstrike, she said.
“He simply got back up, found his phone and told me he needed to finish praying in case another strike hit him. He then chose to stay and help,” Nadine wrote.
The American had spent his final days staying close to the city’s main hospital so he could offer assistance to the elderly, disabled, injured and those too poor to flee, the daughter added, saying that helping others “remained at the forefront.”
The exact circumstances surrounding Jawad’s death couldn’t immediately be verified.
A White House spokesperson confirmed his death Wednesday, saying in a statement: “We are deeply saddened by the death of Kamel Ahmad Jawad and our hearts go out to his family and friends. His death is a tragedy, as are the deaths of many civilians in Lebanon.”
The office of progressive Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) said it had been in touch with Jawad’s family.
Jawad had recently returned to his native Lebanon to take care of his elderly mother, according to the Detroit News.
Israel has been pounding areas of Lebanon with airstrikes since late last month in a bid to target Iran-backed Hezbollah terrorists.
In recent weeks, the Israeli strikes have killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and several of his top commanders.
