Maxime Cressy struggled to contain his emotion after being knocked out of US Open qualifying, with the American tennis star suffering a post-match tantrum on court.
Cressy’s hopes of qualifying for the main draw took what felt like a fatal blow when he lost the opening set 6-0 to British ace Jan Choinski.
The 27-year-old was able to bounce back in the second set though, just edging it by virtue of a tiebreaker.
Now in the groove, it was Cressy who looked most likely to progress, with the Paris-born player even setting up a match point for himself.
Unfortunately for him, that came and subsequently went. As did another, and another, with Cressy unable to get the win across the line.
Sensing a lapse in concentration, Choinski fought back, before eventually taking the contest 6-0, 7-6 (5-7), 7-6 (12-10).
It was a messy ending to the tie, but the drama wouldn’t stop there, as Cressy began throwing what appeared to be pieces of equipment across the court immediately after being dumped out of US Open qualifying.
One can only assume what Cressy was discarding had no use or sentimental value to him, but the former world No.31 cut a visibly frustrated figure on the sideline.
The outburst lasted no longer than 20 seconds or so, but it’s safe to say Cressy’s behaviour divided opinion among tennis fans.
Commenting on X, @scoopmalinowski said: “Completely understandable. I was there. Those two MPs cost him $100,000. He’s lost many matches in this manner, heartbreaking agonizing. He mentally snapped. Tennis is a cruel sport.”
@FernandezPerry added: “I would be too if I were up 6-3 in the final TB w 100k and a ticket to the big dance on the line. That big a serve and net game tells me why he’s still struggling. No return or ground game.”
Whereas @Cineoffical replied: “Disgusting, No respect.”
@ANTONIOEESPARZA claimed: “Absolutely disgusting, no respect for the tournament and the sport of tennis. ATP Tour should legit ban Cressy from the sport.”
And @jaoasbowser commented: “Disgusting. So disrespectful to everyone, and to the game.”
Choinski’s reward for reaching the main draw of the US Open is a match-up against Spaniard and world No.54 Roberto Carballes Baena.
The US Open gets underway in full on Monday 26th August, with the final taking place on Sunday 8th September.
