Last year marked a significant rise for American tennis. Taylor Fritz became the first American man to reach a major final since Andy Roddick at 2009 Wimbledon. Frances Tiafoe set up a US Open semi-final against Taylor Fritz to guarantee there will be an American man in the singles final in New York for the first time in 18 years. Ben Shelton achieved a career-high World No. 13 in the PIF ATP Rankings in August. But 2025 presents fresh challenges for its stars. Fritz, buoyed by his recent United Cup victory with Team USA, is preparing for the Australian Open alongside Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe. However, daunting draws seem to threaten their aspirations.
Fritz wrapped up his 2024 season as World No. 4, reaching the US Open final and winning titles at Eastbourne and Delray Beach. As he enters the 2025 season, he faces a challenging draw, starting with 23-year-old Jenson Brooksby, who is eager to return after an 18-month suspension and injury. If Fritz advances, he could meet Borna Ćorić and then Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard(possibly), a formidable opponent following his strong performance at Brisbane International. Ultimately, Fritz’s toughest test may come in the fourth round against Shelton, who also faces a difficult path in this year’s Australian Open.
The young American star, steadily climbing the rankings, is set to face Brandon Nakashima in the first round of the Australian Open on Sunday. Despite an early exit at the ASB Classic in Auckland against Jakub Mensik, Shelton remains optimistic seeing his serving at a level of “9 or 9.5 because I am serving very well”, but his rest of his game at a 7. He has a favorable history against Nakashima, having defeated him twice last year in Washington and Houston.

If Shelton advances, he could face Pablo Carreno Busta for the first time in the second round and then tackle tougher opponents like either Lorenzo Musetti or Roberto Bautista Agut in the fourth round. While Shelton holds a 2-0 head-to-head record against Bautista, he has previously lost to Musetti, raising the stakes as he potentially prepares to meet Fritz in the fourth round.
Meanwhile, Tiafoe, seeded fourth at the 2025 Brisbane International, started strong with a win over Adam Walton but was eliminated in the second round by Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. Now, he faces Arthur Rinderknech in the first round of the Australian Open, hoping to avenge his previous loss to the Frenchman at the 2024 Lyon Open.
If Tiafoe advances, he could meet Thiago Seyboth Wild in the second round and then face either Andrey Rublev, against whom he has a 1-3 H2H record, or Stan Wawrinka, who has won their last four encounters since 2019. Should he progress further, he may encounter either Daniil Medvedev, who leads their rivalry 5-1, or Alexei Popyrin, who poses a fresh challenge after losing to Tiafoe last year.
The Australian Open promises to be an exciting event for the American players as they head to Rod Laver Arena, eager to practice and aim for a Grand Slam title. While some may face off against each other, their camaraderie remains strong.

While Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton, and Frances Tiafoe have at large captured the spotlight in American tennis, Reilly Opelka is emerging as a formidable contender this season. He made headlines last week by defeating Novak Djokovic at the Brisbane International. However, his final match against Jiri Lehecka ended prematurely due to a back injury while trailing 4-1 in the first set.
In the semifinals, Opelka dominated Perricard, winning 6-3, 7-6(4) while impressively saving all four break points he faced and winning 85% of his first-serve points. This victory marked his 100th tour-level win and advanced him to his seventh final. Despite the disappointment of having to retire in the final due to injury, Opelka remained optimistic, stating on Instagram, “It’s a start🤍🇦🇺.” His fellow players rallied behind him, with Tiafoe praising his performance as a “Big Week” and Ben Shelton sharing a growth graph emoji 📈.
With a career-high ranking of No. 17 in 2022 and a challenging recovery from hip and wrist surgeries, Opelka’s resilience is inspiring. His fellow Americans are excited about his potential comeback, with retired Australian legend John Millman predicting a big year for him.
