Buccaneers U-20 player Andy Quinn has secured a scholarship to Boston College in the United States of America which he will commence in January 2025.
A native of Creggs, close to the Roscommon/Galway border, Andy has played with Buccaneers teams for the past number of years including featuring with the U-20s this season.
A prodigious placekicker, he came to the attention of American football scouts two years ago when winning ‘Ireland’s Kicking King’ contest in front of 43,000 people at the Aer Lingus College Football Classic at the Aviva Stadium. Having come through the qualifying competitions, he was the only one to record a 100 per cent success rate.
This earned him a trip to USA where he received further coaching and, following several visits Stateside in the interim, including a NFL Academy scholarship, he has chosen Boston College in order to give himself the best chance of competing in the professional National Football League. Boston College compete alongside such leading lights as Notre Dame and Florida State.
Now aged 19, Quinn played for the Irish Wolfhounds (Ireland’s national American football team) against Turkey in Ankara recently where he kicked six points and was named Most Valuable Player in the Irish squad.
Buccaneers RFC wishes Andy the best of luck in this “opportunity of a lifetime”.
