Carrie Underwood’s much-discussed performance at Donald Trump’s Inauguration as the 47th President of the United States saw the singer surprise as she belted out America the Beautiful without background music due to technical difficulties.
Underwood’s reveal she was going to perform at the Inauguration previously led to swift backlash, as she was then shared to be a “MAGA Icon” over the news. However, while it has led to her bosses at American Idol fearing for the show’s future, she also allegedly “didn’t care” about the situation.
Now, despite all the backlash she faced and the concerns for Idol, which she joins as a first-time judge this year, Underwood was on hand for her scheduled performance.
Wearing a cream colored dress as she sang from The Caitol Rotunda, Underwood belted out the tune, originally written by Katharine Lee Bates, after Trump took his oath of office.
Many took to social media to discuss the performance.
After the music continued to fail to play, Underwood took matters intoher own hands, opting to perform the song without musical accompaniment, something that earned praise from supporters and viewers.
“Carrie Underwood singing ‘America, the beautiful’ a cappella with her chorus when there was a technical difficulty is one of the most beautiful things I’ve seen in a long time. It takes a lot of strength to be able to sing a cappella and hold your pitch. The entire room was singing and full of resonance and hope,” one said.
“America the Beautiful, no music, sung by Carrie Underwood. Might be the best things I’ve heard,” another said.
The song is a standard that is sung at Presidential inaugurations.
It was last performed at Joe Biden’s Inauguration in 2021, by Jennifer Lopez, who performed that and This Land is Your Land.
