Coco Gauff came back from a set down to reach the Australian Open quarter-finals at the expense of Belinda Bencic on Sunday (19 January).
The No. 3 seed battled through two hours and 26 minutes of tennis to advance 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 to the last eight where the American will face Paula Badosa, who made it past Olga Danilovic in straight sets 6-1, 7-6(7).
Bencic broke Gauff twice in the opening frame, the second of which came with the score tied 5-5 before the Swiss held serve to go up a set after 62 minutes.
But that lit a fire under Gauff, who jumped out to a 3-0 advantage to start the second set. She broke Bencic in the eighth game to even the score.
Gauff showed no signs of slowing down in the deciding set. At 2-1, the 20-year-old broke her opponent for a fourth time and never looked back, winning the match as Bencic’s forehand return went long.
Eyeing her second Grand Slam title, her first since the 2023 US Open, Gauff is 3-3 for her career against Badosa. They most recently met in Beijing last year, when Gauff prevailed in three sets.
