The 2024 edition has featured the best of the best from South America, North America and Central America.
Ten representatives from CONMEBOL have been joined by six invited guests from CONCACAF in a special expanded tournament, which has also served as a warm-up for the 2026 in North America, having been hosted in the United States.

The Copa America had its inaugural edition in 1916 , then known as the South American Championship of National Teams.
Argentina hosted that tournament and the event coincided with the founding of CONMEBOL and with the centenary of Argentine independence, but it was Uruguay who celebrated.
For the tournament, Jose Luis Muratore, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Argentina at that time, commissioned the Casa Escasany, founded by the brothers Ramon, Manuel and Juan, to create a trophy.
The trophy cost Muratore 3,000 Swiss francs and was awarded at the inaugural tournament.
It was made of gold, silver, copper and wood, measuring about 30 centimetres in diameter and 75 centimetres high and weighing 9 kilos.
For the 1979 edition, a base was added to accommodate the plates of the champion countries, while for 2024 it was restored. It currently weighs 11.88 kilos .
Since I took over the presidency of CONMEBOL, one of the goals I set was to preserve and enhance the roots of South American football. This year we restored this iconic trophy, which weighs more than 11.85 kilograms and has been an accomplice to great sporting achievements in our region,” — Alejandro Dominguez, president of CONMEBOL, December 2023.
The original trophy stopped being awarded in 2001. However, it has been restored and will be used again at the 2024 Copa America. The team that wins at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on July 14 will have the honor of lifting it again after a 23-year absence.
To celebrate the centenary of the tournament’s creation, the Copa America was held in a special event in 2016, also in the United States.
A one-off trophy was designed by Epico Studios and manufactured by the English company Thomas Lyte.
Made of metal, with a silver interior finish and 24-carat satin gold plating on the outside, the trophy won by Chile and measured 61 centimetres in height and had a weight of 7.1 kilos.
