A breakthrough stretch on the ATP Challenger Tour in late 2024 saw Basavareddy emerge as one of the latest American tennis prodigies set for a big future on the full ATP Tour. His form even saw Basavareddy get the USA’s reciprocal wildcard entry for the 2025 Australian Open.
His Grand Slam debut at Melbourne Park even threw up a tie with one of the all-time greats as Australian Open organizers drew Basavareddy to face Novak Djokovic in the first round in 2025. It put a rookie, who recently went pro, against the 10-time Australian Open champion.
Playing Djokovic in the first round of the 2025 Australian Open helped to put Basavareddy’s name further on the ATP Tour map. He headed to Melbourne in fine form, too, after making the semi-finals of the ASB Classic after Basavareddy entered the tournament as a qualifier.
The 2025 ASB Classic also saw Basavareddy at 19 years old become the youngest American to reach a tour-level semi-final on a hard court since Reilly Opelka achieved the feat aged 18 at the 2016 Atlanta Open. He defeated Alex Michelsen 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 in their quarter-final tie.

Nishesh Basavareddy is a young, American professional tennis prospect on the ATP Tour. He also has roots in India and Basavareddy earned his Grand Slam debut at the 2025 Australian Open as a wildcard, where Novak Djokovic awaited the 19-year-old in the first-round draw.
Basavareddy only turned professional in December 2024 when the American opted to forgo his college eligibility after studying at Stanford University for two years. He competed for the Cardinals, too, until Basavareddy’s results saw him qualify for the 2024 Next Gen ATP Finals.
Representing the Cardinals even saw Basavareddy help Stanford win the 2024 Pac-12 Team Championship and earn the 2024 Pac-12 Singles Player of the Year award after producing an undefeated conference slate. Basavareddy was also a two-time All-American with Stanford.
September to November 2024 saw Basavareddy dominate the ATP Challenger Tour with 28 match wins out of 34 entered after the US Open. It was also during this stretch that he won Basavareddy’s first and second titles on the Challenger Tour at Tiburon and Puerto Vallarta.
Basavareddy studied Data Science at Stanford University and intends to resume the final 15 months of the course at the conclusion of his professional tennis career. Stanford University does not provide online courses, which forced Basavareddy to forgo his studies to turn pro.

Nishesh Basavareddy is an American and he was born in Newport Beach. It is a small coastal city in Orange County, California with a population of around 82,000 residents. Yet while he competes as an American, Basavareddy is deeply connected with his family’s roots in India.
While Basavareddy was born in Newport Beach, he was raised in Carmel – a suburban city in Hamilton County, Indiana. His family also moved to India when Basavareddy was eight years old, moving closer to their roots with his parents born in Nellore and relatives in Hyderabad.
His Indian roots are a big part of who Basavareddy is, with the American hotshot a big fan of Guntur chili-spiced cuisine and Telugu (also known as Tollywood) films. Basavareddy is also a very intellectual player, who credits his studious approach as his greatest skill on the court.
Standing at a height of 1.8m, Nishesh Basavareddy measures in at 5 ft 10 in feet and inches.
Nishesh Basavareddy’s coaching team is headed up by Bryan Smith, through whom he met Rajeev Ram at a tennis camp in his youth. Ram, who Smith also coaches, has since been an important and consistent source of support for Basavareddy during his rise to the ATP Tour.
As of the time of writing, Nishesh Basavareddy is No133 in the ATP Tour world rankings and it is also his career-best standing to date. Basavareddy reached No133 on January 6, 2025.
Ahead of the 2025 ATP Tour season, Nishesh Basavareddy is yet to feature at a Grand Slam tournament with qualification as a wildcard for the 2025 Australian Open his major debut.
