Mardy Fish has poked fun at Novak Djokovic once again.
The American took to social media after Team USA narrowly escaped a huge upset defeat to Serbia in men’s basketball at the Olympics.
Retired tennis player Fish quickly attracted some backlash from Djokovic’s fans in the replies after reminding the world No. 2 who won in their semi-final.
Djokovic has already been able to take home a gold medal for Serbia at the Paris 2024 Games – the nation’s first gold in tennis. Their basketball team hoped to follow in his footsteps when they faced the Americans in the semi-final.
Serbia were in the lead for most of the game – they were ahead by 17 points in one moment and, going into the final quarter, the score was 76-63. But the US team avoided an upset and won 95-91.
Celebrating their comeback, American ex-tennis star Fish took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to take a light-hearted dig at Djokovic. He wrote: “Yo @DjokerNole I didn’t catch the end of the [USA flag] vs [Serbian flag] Basketball game. Who ended up winning that?”
But he quickly attracted backlash as fans flocked to the replies to defend Serbia, claiming it was still a moral win for their basketball team. @DjokovicFan_ replied: “USA had a roster full of superstars – their best Olympic team ever probably – and barely won.”
Other Djokovic supporters pointed out the 24-time Grand Slam champion’s record against American players. Fish quickly followed up with another post after feeling the wrath of the world No. 2’s fans.
“Btw, I want one fan like Novak has millions!” he tweeted, adding laughing emojis. The former world No. 7 also shared a screenshot of a threatening private message he received, laughing it off and claiming the user was “big mad”.
While Djokovic’s fans might not agree with Fish, the retired tennis star often talks up the Serb and declared that he was the GOAT after winning a gold medal on Sunday. “That’s it for me… Novak Djokovic, the undisputed [goat emoji] of the tennis court,” he wrote.
