HOUSTON – The top seeds in women’s and men’s doubles advanced to their respective championship finals, while the pairings for the final matches in women’s and men’s singles were also determined Saturday at the 2024 American Athletic Conference Individual Tennis Championships at the George R. Brown Tennis Center at Rice University.
Two seeded players will meet for the individual title in women’s singles Sunday as No. 2 seed Leonie Moeller of Memphis and No. 4 seed Divna Ratkovic of Rice came away with semifinal wins Saturday. The men’s singles final will feature two unseeded players as UTSA’s Danijal Muminovic battles Tulsa’s Okonkwo Sunday.
Moeller dropped her first set against Rice’s Darya Schwartzman Saturday, but bounced back to take a 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory, her second three-set win in the tournament. Ratkovic took a 6-3, 6-3 decision against Charlotte’s Sara Suchankova Saturday to secure her place in the final.
Muminovic eliminated his third seeded opponent of the tournament as he scored a 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 win against No. 5-seeded Timothy Carlsson Seger of Tulsa Saturday for his fourth victory of the week. Okonkwo gave Tulsa a presence in the championship final, however, with his 1-6, 7-6 (4), 6-3 win against Tulane’s Luka Petrovic Saturday.
The top-seeded tandem in women’s doubles, Florida Atlantic’s Millie-Mae Matthews and Malwina Rowinska, scored a three-set win in the semifinals Saturday and will face Tulsa’s duo of Mariana Manyoma Velasquez and Ana Naranjo Martinez for the conference title at 9 a.m. ET Sunday.
The men’s doubles final will feature No. 1-seeded Vasco Prata and Matias Iturbe of Charlotte against Tulane’s Petrovic and Luc Hoeijmans, the No. 3-seeded tandem. Prata and Iturbe took a 7-5, 6-3 win against Wichita State’s duo in the semifinals, while Petrovic and Hoeijmans battled from an early deficit to win second- and third-set tiebreakers.
Tulane’s Leigh Van Zyl was the winner in the women’s singles consolation bracket. Van Zyl scored a 4-6, 6-3, [11-9] victory against Tulsa’s Lily Hutchings in Saturday’s consolation final. The men’s consolation winner will be decided Sunday as Hoeijmans faces Rice’s Arthus de la Bassetiere at 12:30 p.m. CT.
