Corey Craig entered the tournament as a wild card selection and upset a top-100 ranked player before facing No. 98 Hugo Hashimoto. After dropping the first set, Craig battled through the second set tied at 4-4 before winning eight of the next nine points to force a third frame. The junior transfer blanked his opponent in the final set with eight straight points to end the match and secure a spot in the main draw.
Youcef Rihane avenged his opening round loss with a strong straight-sets victory in the consolation round over Tulsa’s Timothy Carlsson Seger. Jamie Connel faced defeat multiple times in his match as he was down a set and tied 5-5 in the second set tiebreaker before earning two points to claim the set. Connel then faced a 5-2 game deficit and amazingly won five straight games to steal the match victory.
Erik Schiessl and Joshua Dous-Karpenschif continued their strong start to the season as they dropped just one game in a dominant 6-0, 6-1 performance over their top-75 ranked opponents. Rihane and Alex Bulte were set to face UCF’s top-40 pairing before their opponents withdrew from the match earlier in the day.
The main draw begins tomorrow as Craig will look to continue his impressive run in the singles bracket at 2:30 p.m. ET against No. 22 Danil Panarin of Vanderbilt. Schiessl and Dous-Karpenschif are set to play at 4:30 p.m. against No. 86 Henry Ruger and Hugo Coquelin of Vanderbilt while Rihane and Bulte face No. 21 Hashimoto and Michael Zheng of Columbia at 5:30 p.m. ET.
