After Massachusetts took a one-point lead midway through the fourth quarter on Calu Sutherland’s 23-yard field goal, Tulsa drove into position for a walk-off winning score, but passed up a potential 23-yard field goal and then the Pirates’ Cyrus Fagan came up with an interception off a receiver’s hands with three seconds left. San Diego also is coming off a rough last-second loss, 44-41 against Frisco. The Strike Force took a lead with 18 seconds, but Frisco returned the ensuing kickoff for a TD. San Diego missed a field goal on the final play. … Last year, Tulsa opened June with a 56-55 loss at San Diego as the Oilers missed an 18-yard field goal as time expired. Tulsa’s offense is expected to receive a boost with the return of receiver Josh Crockett, who has been sidelined for four games. The Oilers have also added receiver D’Marcus Adams and defensive lineman Deshon Cooper. … San Diego quarterback Nate Davis, who turned 37 last week, played with the San Francisco 49ers in 2009 and ‘10. Davis’ highlight with the 49ers was leading a fourth-quarter comeback for a preseason win over the Dallas Cowboys. Davis also was the losing quarterback for Ball State in a 45-13 loss to the University of Tulsa in the 2009 GMAC Bowl.
