Danielle Collins demanded ‘more respect’ from a spectator in the Madrid Open crowd after she appeared to be irked.
The world no.13 was down a set against Jaqueline Cristian in their third round match when she opted to respond to the disturbance.
Just as Collins was about to serve in the second set, she turned to one of the stands and was heard saying: “You come out and you play.
“Come out here and do what I do, okay? Have a little more respect.”
It’s unclear who she was talking to or what caused her to clap back, but it clearly distracted her from the action on the court.
Collins’ response was met with applause from other members of the crowd in the Spanish capital before she prepared to serve.
The American won the point with an ace before appearing to turn back to the spectator in question and shout at them in celebration.
With Collins then holding advantage, she fired another powerful serve and won the game as the return from Cristian was hit out.
It’s clear that the 30-year-old wanted to prove a point, and she did just that as she won the second set to level the scoring.
Collins then went on to win the third and final set, with her 3-6 6-4 6-1 victory sealing her spot in the fourth round of the competition.
It was certainly an impressive way to respond to the spectator and her resistance to the disturbance has been rewarded.
She will face either fellow American Robin Montgomery or Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka for a place in the quarter-finals.
Following her second-round Australian Open defeat to world no.1 Iga Swiatek, Collins announced that this will be her final season in professional tennis.
With the French Open on the horizon, she could have one final chance to win the first ever Grand Slam of her career.
