Fourth seed Pegula and 10th seed Navarro have been kept apart in the Indian Wells draw, with both players earning byes into round two.

The former will take on the winner of Peyton Stearns and Magda Linette in round two, with the latter playing either Sorana Cirstea or a qualifier.

California’s Indian Wells Tennis Garden plays host to the iconic tournament, which is a WTA 1000 competition.

Jessica Pegula calls American tennis ‘so strong’ after winning ATX Open

Pegula has now given her take on the state of American tennis ahead of the event, having just lifted a WTA 250 title in Austin.

“US tennis is so strong right now – men and women, it’s been amazing,” said Pegula, as quoted by the United States Tennis Association.

“To see girls like McCartney [Kessler] who are just starting to get going on tour is always really reassuring.

“I feel like we’re doing a good job of setting a good pathway – the girls at the top – for future stars to come in, and from all different pathways, whether it’s girls that are really young or girls that went to college like McCartney.

“I think that’s really important because we definitely all push each other, practise with each other all the time, know each other. I think we take a lot of pride in being Americans and representing. It’s a fun group to be a part of.”

Pegula went all the way in Austin by dropping just one set, with the top seed beating compatriot Kessler in the final.

Their fellow American Navarro meanwhile didn’t drop a single set en route to the Merida Open title in Mexico, with the top seed beating Emiliana Arango 6-0, 6-0 in the final.

Navarro is another who is enjoying the current state of American tennis, across both the WTA and ATP tours.

“It’s awesome to see American tennis doing so well,” she said. “I’m ranked No. 8 and am the No. 4 American, which is crazy.

“There are so many great American players right now in the Top 10, Top 50, but also coming up there’s a lot of good young players.

“I think American tennis is in really great hands and it gives me a ton of pride seeing my fellow countrywomen and countrymen doing well. It’s a super exciting time for American tennis.”
