Detroit knows a good investment when we see one. We’ve built industries, weathered storms and come back stronger every time because we don’t waste time on bad deals — we bet on what works. And USAID? It works. For less than 1% of the federal budget, USAID keeps us safer, creates new markets for American-made goods and prevents costly disasters before they happen. It has been a lifeline for American farmers, manufacturers and businesses— including right here in Michigan.USAID has helped struggling nations grow into stable economies that now buy Michigan-made cars, steel and agricultural products. Without it, those markets dry up, and places like China and Russia step in. If America pulls back, they’ll fill the gap — shaping global trade in ways that hurt American workers.
Not to mention, security. USAID fights poverty, disease and instability — the root causes of war and terrorism. Every dollar we spend preventing a crisis saves us ten times that amount in military interventions down the road. Now, some in Washington want to gut USAID. That’s like refusing to fix a leaky roof and acting surprisedwhen the house floods. USAID is a smart, bipartisan investment that has delivered for 60 years.
Michigan’s leaders need to quit playing politics and stand up for what actually works.Terri Lyon
