No team has ever won three consecutive Super Bowls.
The Kansas City Chiefs can achieve that feat with victory today.
They are the first team to make the Super Bowl after winning the previous two.
There have been other teams who won back-to-back Super Bowls. This is how their attempts at the three-peat went:
Green Bay Packers 1968: After winning the Super Bowl 1 and Super Bowl 2, legendary coach Vince Lombardi retired. This began what was known as the Gory Years for the Packers. In the 1968 season they would have six wins, seven losses and one tie. From 1968 to 1991, the Packers would reach the playoffs in only two seasons.
Miami Dolphins 1974: The next team to go back-to-back was the legendary Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins had 11 wins and three losses in the 1974 season, winning the AFC East division for the fourth year in a row. In the playoffs, they were beaten by the Oakland Raiders in a game known as the “Sea of Hands”. Oakland running back Clarence Davis caught a late touchdown pass to win the game, emerging from a pack of players to be the man to catch the ball. Hence the name, “The Sea of Hands”.
Pittsburg Steelers 1976: The first of two back-to-back Super Bowl titles in the 1970s for the Steelers came in the 1974 and 1975 seasons. IN 1976 the Steelers were again the team to beat. They made it all the way to the AFC Championship game before, again, the Oakland Raiders were the team to end the run.
Pittsburg Steelers 1980: The Steelers dynasty ended in the 1980 NFL season. They failed to make the playoffs despite a nine-win and seven-loss record. Their outstanding defence was aging and did not have the same bite as it did during the 70s.
San Francisco 49ers 1990: If ever there was a team that looked destined to make it three in a row, it was the San Francisco 49ers. After winning the previous two Super Bowls they compiled a terrific season in 1990. The team had 14 wins and just two losses and hosted the NFC Championship game. They lost a thriller to the New York Giants, 15-13. The Giants would go on to win the Super Bowl.
Dallas Cowboys 1994: Owner Jerry Jones and head coach Jimmy Johnson put together one of the great NFL teams in the early 1990s. But with back-to-back Super Bowls won, Jones parted ways with Johnson. Under head coach Barry Switzer the Cowboys would win 12 games in 1994 and made it to the NFC Championship game. They fell to the 49ers in San Francisco 38-28.
Denver Broncos 1999: With the retirement of Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway, the Denver Broncos could not reach the same heights as the previous two seasons. The team won just six games in 1999 and failed to make the playoffs.
New England Patriots 2005: Heading into the 2005 NFL season, the Tom Brady-led New England Patriots had won three of the previous four Super Bowls. That included back-to-back titles in the 2003 and 2004 seasons. Hunting a three-peat, the Patriots won the AFC East division with a record of 10-6. They won their wildcard playoff game over the Jacksonville Jaguars but fell to the Denver Broncos in the divisional round.
