Cary, NC – Main draw play has officially begun at the Cary Tennis Park as 64 singles players and 32 doubles teams all compete for a shot to be crowned ITA All-American Champions, and importantly in 2024, NCAA Individual Championship qualifiers.
Beginning with singles, several seeded players fell on the first day of play as Anastasiya Komar (Oklahoma State) [9]. Amelia Honer (UCSB) [11], Carolina Gomez Alonso (Arkansas) [15], and Mia Kupres (Texas A&M) [16] all lost in the opening round. Each will have an opportunity to qualify for the NCAA Individual Championships through the back draw now.
Several qualifiers continued their impressive streaks of wins here in Cary as Carmen Andreea Herea (Texas), Elza Tomase (Tennessee), Catherine Aulia (Tennessee), Kailey Evans (San Diego), Imogen Haddad (USC), and Sabine Rutlauka (Penn) all won on Wednesday.
In doubles, the top-seeded team of Kajru and Komar (Oklahoma State) were upset by Carter and Jacobs (Washington) by a score of 3-6, 7-6 (1), 10-3 in a marquee matchup under the lights. Kajru and Komar joined five other seeded teams who lost on the opening day of play as upsets flooded the doubles main draw.
The two seeded teams who advanced past the opening round were Collard and Chervensky (Virginia) [2] as well Quadre and Mandelikova (FIU) [5]. Both pairings will remain in the main draw and will compete for one of four qualifying spots in the NCAA Individual Championships.
