Tulsa, Okla. – NC State men’s tennis closed out its time at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa last week, competing in the tournament that ran from Sept. 21-29 as part of its fall schedule.
The Pack had four members of its squad, Martin Borisiouk, Braden Shick, Luca Staeheli, and Fons Van Sambeek, represent the red-and-white in the tournament across both singles and doubles play.
Each of the guys who participated in the tournament in Tulsa can be found in the ITA’s Preseason rankings that came out at the end of August, in singles Shick at No. 33, Van Sambeek at No. 40, Staeheli at No. 57, and Borisiouk at No. 90, in doubles Borsiouk & Staeheli at No. 27 and Shick & Van Sambeek at No. 73.
Senior, Braden Shick worked his way through the tournament pretty far, reaching the round of 16 main draw but falling to Florida State’s Corey Craig. Moving into the consolation bracket, he gained two more wins over No. 44 Theo Dean of Cal and No. 29 Jonah Braswell from Texas both in two-straight sets. Ultimately he fell in three sets to Arizona’s No. 15 Jay Friend in the main draw consolation semifinal.
After picking up two ranked wins in the qualifying stage and main draw, Staeheli faced a tough closing frame in singles as he faced the 5th and 6th-ranked guys in the country back to back.
Both doubles pairs were able to reach the qualifying round of 32. In the qualifying consolation round of 16 73rd-ranked Braden Shick & Fons Van Sambeek secured a win over 37th-ranked Jeremy Jin & Tanapatt Nirundorn of Florida in two-straight sets.
