On Saturday, Nov. 2 at 10 a.m., hear little-known stories that connect prominent Mariettans to the Revolutionary War and the founding of the Northwest Territory.
Among the people and historical events to be discovered: Marietta pioneer Captain Josiah Munro and his family’s fight on Lexington Green that started the American Revolution; General Rufus Putnam’s unorthodox, but brilliant plan that will force the British to evacuate Boston forever; Commodore Abraham Whipple and other Ohio Company members whose burning of the HMS Gaspee in 1772 brought the colonies one step closer to war with King George; a brave ship captain, Nathaniel Saltonstall, whose tombstone makes clear he should not be confused with his cousin who suffered a terrible naval defeat only surpassed by Pearl Harbor; Betty Lovell, one of the last people to see her great-uncle, George Washington, alive and inherited from him a famous American flag; and iconic America legend, Johnny Appleseed, and some of his large family who called Washington County home.
The free event will meet at Mound Cemetery (Fifth and Scammel streets) and no registration is required. For more information, call 740-373-1057 x606.
