The New England Patriots remain unmoved by what has been put on the table for the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft, according to MassLive.com’s Mark Daniels and Karen Guregian.
Daniels and Guregian cited a source who said the trade offers have been “laughable” and well below what it would take for the Pats to move back in the first round.
That aligns with the tone from some recent reporting about New England.
Mike Reiss of ESPN reported Sunday the “most likely scenario” is the Pats staying in their current position and taking one of three quarterbacks: LSU’s Jayden Daniels, North Carolina’s Drake Maye or Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy.
“Simply put, as one Patriots source said late last week, ‘you can’t win without a quarterback,'” Reiss wrote. “[Head coach Jerod] Mayo and some top decision-makers have privately acknowledged that their legacies will be tied to whatever they decide at quarterback.”
ESPN’s Adam Schefter then reported Monday that New England has received trade calls but that a “big offer” is required for the team to bite.
In some years, trading out of the top five can be an easy decision. A team may not have one clear target in mind, or in the case of the Pats this year there wouldn’t be a wide gulf in quality between what’s available at No. 3 compared to later in the top 10 or even further back.
But Mayo and Patriots director of scouting Eliot Wolf have in their hands a straightforward solution to the franchise’s glaring need for a quarterback. They wouldn’t be perceived as making a major reach, either, whether they chose Daniels, Maye or McCarthy.
New England has an ulterior motive behind deeming its trade offers so far to be “laughable” because it encourages interested suitors to bring more to the table. But this probably goes beyond pure posturing since the team has a compelling reason to keep the pick for itself.
