Drama followed the New York Giants backfield this offseason as Saquon Barkley ultimately left the organization that drafted him and chose to sign a free-agent deal with the rival Philadelphia Eagles.
Without Barkley, the Giants really don’t have a focal point to their offense, though the hope is this year’s sixth overall pick, Malik Nabers, will fill that void.
But the running back rotation will be drastically different. However, the Giants may feature a promising trio of ball-carriers to take pressure off of quarterback Daniel Jones and the passing game.
Devin Singletary signed a three-year, $16.5 million contract to join Big Blue. Singletary has been a steady presence since entering the league in 2019. He ran for over 800 yards in three straight seasons. It’s the options behind Singletary that can really provide a boost.
Both Tyrone Tracy Jr. and Eric Gray performed well in the Giants’ preseason debut against the Detroit Lions. The two combined to carry the ball nine times for 78 yards. Gray provided two scores, including a 48-yard scoring romp.
Gray and Tracy were fifth-round draft picks in back-to-back classes. The two add some juice, as evidenced by a combined 8.7 yards per carry.
Daboll deemed this an important preseason. Both backs answered the called in Week 1.
