After being supplanted as the highest-paid wide receiver in the NFL, Miami Dolphins star Tyreek Hill reportedly is hoping to regain the top spot.
According to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, “the effort to address Hill’s contract began after the 2023 season ended,” and that “effort intensified after Eagles receiver A.J. Brown got his latest new contract.”
Brown received a three-year, $96 million contract extension from the Philadelphia Eagles that includes $84 million guaranteed, the largest guarantee for a receiver in NFL history. The $32 million annual average value also surpassed Hill’s $30 million average.
Hill is entering the second year of the four-year, $120 million extension he signed when Miami acquired him in a blockbuster trade with the Kansas City Chiefs. However, Florio explained earlier on Thursday that his deal isn’t as good as it seems.
Hill is set to make just $19.6 million this season, and he’s scheduled to make what Florio described as “a ridiculously unrealistic” $45 million in the final year of his deal in 2026. Subtracting the final year of his deal, Hill is actually making an average of $25 million per year.
Earlier this month, Hill expressed a desire to remain in Miami for the remainder of his career, but he added, “So sign me,” indicating that he was hoping for a new deal. However, he is under contract for the next three years and won’t be going anywhere if the Dolphins don’t want to get rid of him.
In addition to Brown, multiple receivers have already earned big-money extensions this offseason like Amon-Ra St. Brown of the Detroit Lions and Nico Collins of the Houston Texans. Even Hill’s running mate Jaylen Waddle was rewarded with a three-year, $84.75 million contract extension from Miami on Thursday that includes $76 million guaranteed and makes him one of the NFL’s top five highest-paid receivers, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Hill is coming off a stellar 2023 campaign in which he led the NFL with 1,799 receiving yards, so it’s understandable that he wants to be compensated among the best receivers in the league. The Dolphins should be ready to empty their pockets for the eight-time Pro Bowler in hopes of avoiding future strife.
