Before being selected by the Green Bay Packers in the third round of the 2024 NFL draft, rookie running back MarShawn Lloyd reportedly was coveted by a pair of NFC East teams.
Per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Dallas Cowboys “had shown enough pre-draft love” to Lloyd that the former USC speedster “thought the Cowboys would be one of the possible teams to draft him.” Also, the New York Giants “had [their] sights on” Lloyd “as a future lead back but didn’t have a pick between Nos. 71 and 107.” The Packers ended up selecting him at No. 88.
After transferring from South Carolina to USC for the 2023 season, Lloyd racked up 820 yards and nine touchdowns on 116 carries while also adding 13 receptions for 232 yards, averaging 17.8 yards per catch.
Lloyd is joining a talented Packers backfield that is led by two-time Pro Bowler Josh Jacobs, who signed a four-year deal with Green Bay earlier this offseason after spending the first five years of his career with the Las Vegas Raiders. The Packers also re-signed reliable backup A.J. Dillon, who was set to become a free agent.
After losing out on Lloyd, the Cowboys opted not to draft a running back with any of their eight picks. The Giants, meanwhile, selected Purdue running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. in the fifth round.
