American Legion Post 336 in Painesville is planning a July 20 family fun day at its 60 Chester St. post with remembrance ceremonies, food, giveaways, live music and an opportunity for veterans to connect to community resources.
Post Adjutant Lewis Ballard described the event that is open to the public as an “effort to keep the veteran POW/MIA issue in the forefront.”
The event will begin at noon with an Ohio POW/MIA wall ceremony, followed by a roll call of the missing at 1 p.m. Ballard said that the roll call will be a “solemn ceremony” where the numbers of missing soldiers from different wars will be read aloud.
Both ceremonies will involve Ohio chapters of the organization Rolling Thunder. Rolling Thunder states on its website that it “supports U.S. military active duty, veterans, prisoners of war and personnel missing in action from past wars.”
The American Legion Riders will then hold “Big Money” drawings every 15 minutes from 2 to 4:30 p.m., the flyer stated. Tickets will cost $10 and can be purchased through the Riders.
Ballard added that the event will also include basket raffles offered by the American Legion Auxiliary.
Representatives from the Department of Veterans Affairs’ Willoughby clinic will also be on site. Any veteran who wants to register with the clinic will need to bring a copy of his or her DD-214 form.
The flyer added that the Sons of the American Legion will serve hot dogs and hamburgers from 5 to 7 p.m. and the Midnight Riders Band will provide live music from 6 to 9 p.m.
