The British Army Jackals should be proud of their improvements after beating reigning Inter Services American football champions, the RAF Mustangs, in Abingdon, according to their player Major Drew Newiss.
Maj Newiss was speaking after a stunning 18-6 win for the Army that takes the 2024 Inter Services title race into the final match against the Royal Navy.
Jacob Shotton and Lewis Dyer were touchdown scorers for the Jackals who put in a much better performance compared to last year’s defeat.
“I’m very proud of the improvements we’ve made,” said Maj Newiss.
“I think last year we came in prepared but we weren’t physical enough. We’ve really stepped up that physicality this year and I think that’s shown in the scoreline today.”
The title will now be decided when the Army take on the Royal Navy, who have already lost to the RAF, next week but Maj Newiss isn’t underestimating their challenge.
“There’s a saying in American football that ‘on any given Sunday’,” he said. “Okay, it’s any given Friday for us but it’s a sport where anything can happen.”
