Toby Sheets, a longtime assistant to trainer Steve Asmussen, was found dead in Greece on Sunday, Thoroughbred Daily News reported.
After multiple news reports that an American tourist was found dead on the Greek island Mathraki, Sheets’s cousin, Greg Sheets, confirmed his identity.
“He did pass away in Greece,” Greg Sheets told TDN. “As of right now that’s all we know. The family is trying to figure out what happened.”
Asmussen told TDN that Sheets will be “deeply missed” and noted his “expert handling of Haynesfield among others.”
Sheets, shown at far right in the photo above, was reported missing Thursday by a Greek-American friend whom he had been visiting, the Associated Press reported. He last was seen on Tuesday in a cafe with two female tourists who have left the island, according to the report.
He was found on a rocky, fairly remote beach, according to the report.
Several tourists on the Greek islands have died or gone missing recently, according to the report. Some had set out on hikes in very hot temperatures.
