Local Palestinian media reports that a Turkish-American woman was shot by Israeli soldiers in the West Bank and later died.
The reports on Friday said the victim was a 26-year-old activist who was participating in a protest against the expansion of Jewish settlements in the occupied Palestinian territory.
The incident occurred in the town of Beita.
US State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller told NHK and other media on Friday that they were aware of the tragic death of an American citizen in the West Bank and were urgently gathering more information about the circumstances of her death.
The Israeli military also said in a statement on Friday that it fired toward a person who hurled rocks at them, posing a threat.
The military said the details of the incident and the circumstances are under review.
