The sporting world will stop next Monday AEDT when Superbowl LIX takes centre stage to crown this season’s champions of the NFL.
The Superbowl has become a cultural phenomenon, mixing the world of sport, entertainment, music and fashion.
It is the one game of American football that attracts casual spectators and those just wanting to see the stars.
Whether you’re a die-hard football fan or lover of the arts, here is everything you need to know about Superbowl LIX.
Every Superbowl pits the champions of the American Football Conference (AFC) against the champions of the National Football Conference (NFC).
This season, the Kansas City Chiefs will represent the AFC in the Superbowl.
The Chiefs defeated the Buffalo Bills 32-29 in the AFC Championship game to advance to their fifth Super Bowl in six years.
The NFC is being represented by the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Eagles defeated the Washington Commanders 55-23 in the NFC Championship game to advance to the biggest match of the year.
This is the second Superbowl appearance for the Eagles in the past three years.
The NFL Superbowl will be held on Monday, February 10 (AEDT)
There are several ways for people to follow the action at the Superbowl.
ABC Sport will provide a live blog of Superbowl LIX between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles from 9am AEDT.
Free-to-air broadcaster, Seven Network, will broadcast the game on Channel Seven, 7mate and stream it on 7plus.
Foxtel will broadcast the Superbowl on the ESPN channel, as well as streaming the Superbowl on Kayo.
Those who subscribe to the NFL Game Pass through the streaming platform DAZN can also watch the Superbowl.
Here is the kick-off time in your state or territory:
For the eighth time, the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans will host the Superbowl.
More Superbowls have been played here than any other stadium.
The Louisiana Superdome’s first Superbowl was in 1978, when the Dallas Cowboys defeated the Denver Broncos 27-10 in Superbowl XXII.
The last time the Superbowl was in New Orleans was 2013, when the Baltimore Ravens defeated the San Francisco 49ers 34-31 in Superbowl 47.
That game was famous for many reasons. The lights in the Louisiana Superdome went out during the second half, leading to a 34-minute delay of the match.
It was the first and only time two brothers — Jim and John Harbaugh — were the opposing head coaches.
It was the final match before retirement for Baltimore’s Ray Lewis and San Francisco’s Randy Moss, both of whom were later inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Multi-Grammy-Award winner Kendrick Lamar will deliver this year’s Superbowl half-time show.
Lamar has made an appearance at the Superbowl previously, appearing as a special guest during the 2022 half-time show headlined by Dr Dre and Snoop Dogg.
It is common for there to be guest appearances during the show. However, Grammy Award winner SZA is the only confirmed guest performer at this year’s show.
Apparently yes.
Taylor Swift’s relationship with Chief’s tight-end Travis Kelce was a lightning rod for attention last season.
A swathe of new fans flocked to the NFL on the back of Swift’s association, which culminated in the global megastar being front and centre of last year’s Superbowl coverage.
No sooner had the Chiefs scored the game-winning touchdown in overtime, that the cameras were squarely on Swift celebrating in her corporate box.
Swift has attended fewer Chiefs games this season as she has finished up her Eras Tour, but according to reporters Bernie Zilio and Eileen Reslen with tabloid Page Six, she will be at the Louisiana Superbowl.
The Kansas City Chiefs have won the previous two Superbowls.
They are attempting to become the first team to win three consecutive Superbowls.
Last year the Chiefs triumphed in one of the great championship games.
Led by quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs drove 75 yards (68.58 metres) in 13 plays to score the game-winning touchdown in overtime.
Mahomes’s three-yard touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman sealed the 25-22 win over the San Franciso 49ers.
The Eagles have won just one Superbowl in their history.
It came in 2018 when backup quarterback Nick Foles led Philadelphia to a famous 41-33 win over the New England Patriots.
That game is best remembered for the Philly Special, when Foles became a receiver and caught a touchdown on 4th and goal, just seconds before half-time.
The Eagles’ last Superbowl appearance was two years ago when they were felled by the Chiefs in a nail-biting 38-35 classic.
When the Eagles won in 2018, it proved to be the win that prevented the Patriots from becoming the first team to win three consecutive Superbowls. The Tom Brady-led Patriots won the Superbowl in 2017 and 2019.
Philadelphia could again stop a three-peat if they can avenge their loss from two seasons ago and slay the Chiefs.
