This weekend, the Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Mavericks absolutely shocked the NBA world by swapping Luka Doncic for Anthony Davis and a first round pick, with a few other pieces wrapped into the three-team deal peripherally involving the Utah Jazz. Even Doncic and Davis were caught completely off guard by the move, which instantly shifted the future of both franchises.
As surprised as the involved players seemed to be, fans on social media were just as stunned. The immediate reaction by many was that the social media accounts of top insider Shams Charania, who broke the news, must have been hacked, with so many fans in absolute disbelief that Dallas would make such a move. Plenty of users tried to draw parallels from other major moves to this one, but a large proportion of them came to the conclusion that there’s simply no comparison to a trade quite like the Davis-Doncic swap.
So was this trade the most shocking in North American sports history? According to FOX Sports, it just might be- check out their ranking of the top 10 in the list below.

There may be just a tad of recency bias at play here. It’s hard to put this trade on the tier of the infamous Babe Ruth swap, which birthed arguably the greatest rivalry in North American professional sports. There are also a handful of trades on the list that involved the consensus best player in the sport, like the Gretzky, Chamberlain and Rodriguez moves, to name a few. Doncic is a bona fide superstar, but very few serious individuals are discussing him as the very best NBA player- that’s Nikola Jokic without much of a doubt.
Even so, there’s no way around the fact that this move was an absolute stunner. There were no preceding rumors, and both franchises’ trajectories immediately underwent seismic changes. Revisionist history is always applied to these matters, so the biggest factor that has yet to be determined is just how the move plays out for both sides.
Will Davis regain his near-MVP form and keep Dallas in Western Conference contention a year after making The Finals? Might Doncic be the perfect compliment to an aging LeBron James and help the King to a fifth championship? Or will both players struggle to make an impact in their new homes Only time will tell, but nothing that happens in the years to come can ever change the pure shock that all NBA fans felt on Saturday night- or perhaps Sunday morning- when they saw the trade news.
